Sin dal 1982 gli Autori hanno studiato i pazienti con sintomi varicosi ma senza varici, proponendo inizialmente il termine di insufficienza venosa cronica ab initio a sottolineare che il disturbo non è secondario ad una malattia acuta. Studi successivi hanno puntualizzato che il suo fulcro fisiopatologico è la riduzione del tono venoso e quindi è stato proposto il termine di flebopatia ipotonica. Dopo i preliminari studi di fisiopatologia, dal 1989 al 1992 è stato realizzato uno studio epidemiologico (Progetto Acireale) che ha indicato una prevalenza del 15,90%.

L’argomento è stato presentato e vivacemente discusso in numerosi meeting internazionali (1995: Mediterranean Congress of Angiology, Corfù; World Congress of International Union of Angiology, London; Dedicaded Breakfast Session during the World Congress of International Union of Phlebology, London). È stato ampiamente discusso durante la Consensus Conference on Chronic Venous Insufficiency di Abbay de Cernay, 1996.

Due studi simili condotti in Francia nel 1992 hanno descritto quadri clinici sovrapponibili con una analoga prevalenza (15%).

Il lavoro è la pubblicazione in lingua inglese dei risultati dello studio epidemiologico, con il commento di Hugo Partsch (Presidente della UIP).

Ever since 1982 the Authors have been interested in varicose symptoms without varicose veins. Caring out several pilot studies they initially proposed the term of Venous Insufficiency, chronic ab initio, underling that the syndrome start always without any acute phlebopathy. Further studies showed that the syndrome’s milestone is the reduction of the venous tone, and the term of Hypotonic Phlebopathy has been proposed. The topic has been discussed during several international meetings (1995: Mediterranean Congress of Angiology, Corfu; World Congress of International Union of Angiology, London; Dedicated Breakfast Session during the World Congress of International Union of Phlebology, London; 1996: Consensus Conference on Chronic Venous Insufficiency, Abbay de Cernay).

Two independent studies realized in France in 1992, described similar clinical features, with the same prevalence showed by the Acireale Project (15 vs. 15,90%).

The paper is the official publication of the results of the Acireale Project, with the comments of Hugo Partsch (President of UIP).
